On the top of the dike you will find many memorials remembering the Operation Infatuate II, which started on October 31st 1944. You will find a Sherman Tank, many photo's, names of the fallen and several remembrance memorials.
"On October 27, 1944, the Royal Navy T-Force arrived in Ostend. This naval combat group, consisting of 123 ships, was created for amphibious landings at Westkapelle. The troops were from the 41st, 47th and 48th Royal Marine Commandos, as well as the 4th Special Service Brigade. In addition, Belgians, Dutch and Norwegians from the 10th Inter Allied Command competed. October 31, the naval combat group steamed to Westkapelle.
The British battleship HMS Warspite and two gunboats were supposed to destroy the German coastal batteries, which had been unsuccessful with heavy bombardment by the RAF. This proved to be a considerable challenge and the Allies suffered heavy casualties. A total of nine landing craft sank. The warships opened fire to lure the coastal batteries' fire away from the landing troops who were already struggling to capture a 400-meter-wide gap in the dike, having to reach the coast between the mines first. At the end of the day Westkapelle was liberated. One dike was conquered because Walcheren was flooded after previous Allied bombing raids, which prevented the Germans from being supplied and had to stop firing."
