Noted American artist Edward Hopper (1892-1967) first came to Maine in the summer of 1914. He set up shop in the small coastal community of Ogunquit where several other artists had an established presence. He was to make many more trips to the state during his lifetime painting various coastal scenes, lighthouses and cityscapes. Two of Hopper’s iconic paintings of Maine have been used as motifs on postage stamps commemorating Maine’s anniversaries: one in 1970 (150th anniversary) and again in 2020.

The oil painting reproduced on this postage stamp was executed in 1914 during Hopper’s first summer in Maine. It’s named “Sea at Ogunquit” and shows a rocky coastal scene. The view today has changed little since 1914 except for a few houses built on the bluff. The spot can be reached from the sculpture garden behind the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.
