The Lion Shrine is found not too far from the Registrar's office on the PSU Altoona campus. There are visitor spaces in the Ivy Parking lot off of Juniata Gap Road.

The original Nittany Lion Shrine at the Pennsylvania State University was dedicated on Saturday, October 24, 1942 during Homecoming festivities.
Heinrich "Heinz" Warneke designed the original statue. He had years of experience carving animals from clay and metal. He created several potential designs after visiting the site of the statue. Once the design was chosen, Warneke formed a wooden frame and made the statue with clay. He then used this as a model while carving the actual statue from a 13-ton limestone block on site. Stone carver, Joseph Garatti assisted.
The shrine is a gift of the class of 1940.
In 1968 Warneke approved the creation of one-quarter scale replicas to be cast in plastic and placed at each of the Penn State branch campuses.
