[EN] Mertova díra is located in the Klopotovské valley near Nové Mesto nad Metují. It is a barred, currently inaccessible gallery, which leads perpendicular to the Bohdašín brook two meters above its surface. Behind the bars was a statuette of a Permian, now there is a statuette of a farmer Merta. The adit gradually slopes and thus the depth of the water increases. The longitudinal profile of the gallery without branches breaks down after 50 meters, after another four meters it ends with an irregular face. The width and height of the gallery does not exceed 1.2 meters, allows movement in a crouched position or on the knees. The entrance portal made of crumbly phyllite is sanitized with a layer of shotcrete.

The history of mining is poorly documented and relies more on reputation. According to that, farmer Merta from Blažkov found silver ore. However, he kept the secret of the find to himself and secretly mined and sold the ore. Since then, the place has been called Mert's Hole.

The confirmed existence of the place dates back to 1550, when the burgher Macek borrowed a book written in German on mining from a miner, when the New Town Silver Mines were listed. The mining was to be carried out by the lords of Náchod from Dubá. The ore was smelted at the New Town Castle. But even this is an unconfirmed fact, which is not confirmed by any document. The end of mining was caused by the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and the place was deserted.

In the 1980s, there was again interest in ore mining. In 1783, a survey of the gallery was carried out by mining experts from Kutná Hora. According to excavation technology, they estimated the beginning of mining at the 15th century, based on the fact that no gunpowder was used, but mine poles were found to break the rock. Analysis of the ore revealed the content of pyrite, siderite, quartz and galena with 10% silver. According to the miners' approval, traces of gold were to appear in the ore. Based on this information, the partners Josef Frinta and František Kodytek asked for a foundation certificate, which was assigned on November 6, 1783. The mining guild of St. Jan Nepomucký. After two years, however, mining proved unprofitable, mining was stopped and the mining guild disintegrated.
