The Academy of Athens was established in 1926. According to there charter:

"The general and overarching objective of the Academy of Athens, in accordance with its Founding Charter, is the cultivation and advancement of the Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts, along with the communication of the Foundation and its Members with other Academies and fellow Academicians. In fulfillment of its objective the Academy conducts scientific research projects and studies in the areas of agriculture, industry, shipping, national economy. Furthermore it issues consultations, proposals, it adopts decisions and judgments for the instruction and guidance of the bodies and authorities of the state." (visit link)

The Neo-Classical style marble Academy building consists of a central block with two wings. A group of six Ionic columns support the sculptured pediment by Leonidas Drosis above the portico entrance. The two major sculptures on high pedestals are on the right the Greek god Apollo, who among his many attributes is the god of sun and light, music and poetry, prophecy and knowledge. On the left is the goddess Athena, she is the goddess of both wisdom and warfare. The seated statues that flank the staircase are on the left Plato and on the right Socrates.
