The man with the presidency called "Era of Good Feelings" lived here with his family after they purchased the home. The Monroe's lived here for 20 years. Monroe came up with the name of "highland" and it stuck. It was not until after his death when the building was called Ash Lawn. Today, it is a historic site on the National Register of Historic Places.
