These chalk formations were created during the Cretaceous period when the area was under the Niobrara Seaway.

80 million years ago, the formations were a thick sea bed. They formed as microscopic organisms and marine life remains calcified.

The Rocky Mountain slow uplift at the end of the Cretaceous period drained the seaway. Sedimentary material was deposited during the Tertiary period. In the Pleistocene period, glaciers and rains formed most of today’s rivers and creeks. At this time the chalk beds were cut from the sea bed by the Smoky Hill river. Harder layers in the chalk protected the underlying rock from erosion, but the monuments continue to erode.

Please do not climb the rocks or dig for artifacts.
