The 26th Regiment of the United States Colored Infantry, was one of three African American units from New York State that fought in the Civil War. Twenty-six men enlisted in this unit at the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. A monument honoring these men is located on the grounds of the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Ithaca, NY. The monument is inscribed:
