DE: Am 5. Mai 1733 wurde der Freiherr Johann Baptist von Roll in einem Duell von seinem Kontrahenten Friedrich Christian von Bevervörde erstochen. Aus Trauer über den Verlust seines engen Vertrauten gab Kurfürst Clemens August eine etwa 1,5m große Statue des heiligen Nepomuk in der Bildhauerwerkstatt der Gebrüder Asam in Auftrag. Die Statue wurde nach ihrer Fertigstellung am Ort des Duells, nahe dem Zusammenschluss der heutigen Straßen Comesstraße und Poststraße, auf einem Sockel aufgestellt.

Dort stand sie dann bis zum Jahr 1937. Den herrschenden Nationalsozialisten gefiel die Statue wegen ihrer Symbolik nicht und wollte diese zerstören lassen. Mutige Bürger retteten die Statue, nahmen sie auseinander und versteckten diese in der Klosterkirche Sankt-Maria-von-den-Engeln, wo sie bis Anfang der 1960er Jahre vergessen wurde.

Nach Ihrer Wiederentdeckung war sie 1961 Ausstellungsobjekt in der Clemens-August-Ausstellung, die anlässlich des 200. Todestages des Kurfürsten im Brühler Schloss veranstaltet wurde. Nach der Ausstellung stand die Statue allerdings weiterhin unbeachtet im Schloss, so dass der Brühler Heimatbund sich ab 1967 darum bemühte, dass die Statue wieder an einer prominenteren Stelle aufgestellt würde. Anfang 1972 wurde den Gesuchen des Heimatbundes stattgegeben und die Statue im Vorhof der Klosterkirche Sankt-Maria-von-den-Engeln gegenüber dem von Elmar Hillebrandt gestalteten Bronzeportal aufgestellt.

Am ursprünglichen Ort erinnert heute ein aufgestelltes Schild an das stattgefundene Duell.

EN: On May 5th in 1733, Baron Johann Baptist von Roll was stabbed to death in a duel by his opponent Friedrich Christian von Bevervörde. Out of mourning over the loss of his close confidante, Elector Clemens August commissioned an approximately 1.5 m tall statue of St. Nepomuk in the Asam brothers' sculpture workshop. After its completion, the statue was placed on a pedestal at the site of the duel, near the junction of today's Comesstrasse and Poststrasse.

It stood there until 1937. The ruling National Socialists did not like the statue because of its symbolism and wanted to have it destroyed. Courageous citizens saved the statue, took it apart and hid it in the monastery church of Saint Mary of the Angels, where it was forgotten until the early 1960s.

After it was rediscovered, it was exhibited in the Clemens August exhibition in 1961, which was held on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Elector's death in Brühl Castle. After the exhibition, however, the statue continued to stand in the castle, so that the Brühler Heimatbund endeavored from 1967 to put the statue back in a more prominent place. At the beginning of 1972 the requests of the Heimatbund were granted and the statue was placed in the forecourt of the monastery church Sankt-Maria-von-den-Engeln opposite the bronze portal designed by Elmar Hillebrandt.

At the original location, a sign today reminds of the duel that took place.
