The five oil storage tunnels, built during 1943-45 after Japanese bombing destroyed the above ground tanks. The horseshoe cross-section shaped tunnels are 4.5m wide and 5.4m high and have welded steel lined walls and concrete floors. There were serious problems caused by water penetration and the tunnels were never used for naval oil fuel storage, although aviation spirit was stored in them,
