Construction of Government House, also known as The Residency, began in 1870 and is the earliest and most significant government building in the Northern Territory. A central stone room in the present building over the cellar was constructed in 1870 and used as a drawing room within a larger timber building. This wooden building was replaced by the present stone (porcellanite) and cypress pine structure in 1879.
The building is surrounded by wide verandahs enclosed by timber framed asbestos cement shutters and roofed by a series of steeply pitched corrugated iron gables
