[FR] Attachée à la fosse n°10 de la Compagnie des mines de Béthune, cette cité minière témoigne des qualités urbaines, paysagères et architecturales des ensembles d’habitat réalisés par les compagnies minières afin d’attirer et de fixer leur main d’œuvre.
Les alignements d’arbres qui soulignent les grandes perspectives des principaux axes et les jardins clôturés par des haies végétales démontrent l’attention portée par la Compagnie aux qualités paysagères de la cité. La richesse des volumétries confère aux logements d’intéressantes qualités architecturales. Certaines habitations sont complétées par des porches marqués par un arc-boutant reposant sur un sabot de pierre, détail architectural typique de la Compagnie.
Un secteur dédié rassemble les principaux équipements collectifs de la cité : église, écoles, ouvroir, dispensaire, etc. Ces derniers permettent tout à la fois à la Compagnie d’offrir des services à la population minière, de contrôler son temps libre et d’afficher sa puissance. L’église Sainte-Marguerite, édifiée dans un style Art déco, est désacralisée en 2005. Réhabilitée, elle est transformée par la commune en lieu d’accueil de manifestations culturelles.
[EN] Attached to the Béthune Mining Company mine number 10, this mining community is a testament to the urban, landscape, and architectural planning efforts made by the mining companies around collective housing in order to attact and keep their workforce.
The rows of trees which line the principal roads and the gardens enclosed by hedges show the attention paid by the company to create a pleasant landscape.
The housing is given more luxurious architectural features. Certain units feature porches are decorated with buttresses resting on a stone base which was a typial architectural detail of the company.
One sector was dedicated to collective services of the community : Church, school, workrooms, despensary, etc. These centrally organized services allowed the company to control the free time of the mining population and to display its power.The Sainte-Marguerite church, built in an Art Deco style, was deconsecrated in 2005. It was rehabilitated and transformed by the community into a place for hosting cultural events.
