The Cross Gates to Wetherby railway line was built to connect to the Harrogate to Church Fenton railway line.
The existing railway station at Wetherby was moved to form a triangular junction. The new line headed towards the Harrogate to Church Fenton and then after leaving Wetherby Station the line split to head to Harrogate to the north west and Church Fenton to the south east.
This bridge carries a lane that formerly serviced a quarry over the western junction to the part of the Crossgates to Wetherby Line that is heading towards Harrogate.
The track over the bridge is now a bridle path for horses and is also used by pedestrians and cyclists.
The Wetherby Railway Path
The section of the Harrogate to Church Fenton railway between Spofforth and Thorp Arch has been turned into a 'Rails to Trails' cycle and walking path called the Wetherby Railway Path.
The railway closed in 1964 and the railway station at Wetherby demolished. The site of the station has been converted into a car park and the main line of the Harrogate to Church Fenton railway between Spofforth and Thorp Arch and the two linking parts of the junction from the station now form the Wetherby Railway Path for cyclists and hikers.
