"At the main entrance to Richelieu Park is the imposing statue representing the two illustrious heads of state at the end of World War II, facing a France beginning its reconstruction. Inaugurated in June 2017, it symbolizes cooperation between the two countries in difficult times of the 20th century.
The monument was inaugurated on June 24, 2017. This work was
made by sculptor Patrick Berthaud. The statue of Charles of
Gaulle measures 3m05 and that of Winston Churchill 2m55. This
monument represents them looking at a fragmented France which
gradually regains its original contours, a vision of the future built by these two men.
It also has historical significance. Calais was a strategic position during the Second World War. The city resists the invader. Winston Churchill congratulated the resistance of the troops stationed in Calais but forbade their evacuation.
They have no chance against the German forces. 3000 English soldiers and 800 French soldiers were sacrificed so that Calais could hold out three more days.
This strategic move was decisive for the accomplishment of Operation Dynamo which allowed the evacuation of 333,226 soldiers by a fleet of 850 boats to Great Britain."
