Dec. 2015This mosaic was inspired by the A. J. Jackson painting entitled "St. Cloud" which was the first name given to Ashcroft in 1860 when it was an established camp.
Alexander Young Jackson was born on October 3, 1882 and passed away on April 5, 1974. He was a Canadian painter and the founding member of the Group of Seven and also served as a war artist during World War I. He visited Ashcroft in 1945 where he completed several paintings and sketches. Three of his works are now displaced as mosaics. This mosaic was completed in December 2015.
This is one of three mosaics on the side of the Sidewalk Gallery and were inspired by one of AY Jackson’s sketches on September 6, 1945 while Jackson visit Ashcroft.
Ashcroft’s Sidewalk Gallery gives local artists a place to display their work and is operated by Angela Bandelli and located in the Rolgear Building on Railway Avenue.
