Valerián Pejša (November 6, 1858 Zlonice - August 12, 1893 Berovice) was a Czech folk writer.
Valerián Pejša came from the family of a rural blacksmith. He was born in Zlonice u Slaného; he spent his childhood from one to thirteen years of age in Risuty, where he also attended a one-class school. He spent his adolescence in Královice. Here, the young Dog was towards the interest in literature permanently influenced by his friendship with a royal native, Josef Leopold Hrdina, two years older, then a student of the Slánská grammar school, later a writer. During his stay in Královice, Pejša soon became part of the local cultural events and one of the leading organizers and actors of the local amateur theater performances. While some of his peers could study, Valerián Pejša, according to his father's will, had to work as a blacksmith's craft and work as a worker in a family smithy. He could thus cultivate his literary work only in his free time as an escape activity. From 1880 he lived with his parents in Berovice and from about that time he began to become known and popular with the general reading public with his contributions in contemporary satirical magazines. Pejša's short stories and poems, which he drew inspiration from in his rural surroundings, were published in titles such as Jakub Arbes's Goblin, Rudolf Pokorný's Palecek and J. R. Vilímek's Humoristic Letters. His soulmate among his literary colleagues was the deaf Prague writer Ludmila Grossmannová-Brodská, with whom he corresponded for years. According to her testimony, it was literary work that used to be "the only consolation, joy and entertainment" for the Berovice blacksmith, to which he ran away from physically striking work. [4] Suffered from tuberculosis of the lungs, he died in Berovice in 1893. He is buried in the family grave in the old, now disused cemetery near the church of St. Simon and Judy in the neighboring village Dolín.
Pejš's work, although popular at the time, remained on the pages of magazines. He did not publish any books himself, only posthumously published a small book committee from his work at the expense of V. Kremen in Zlonice in 1912.
