Descriptif

La chapelle Notre-Dame du Kreisker (en breton léonard Chapel Introun Varia ar C'hreizkear, en latin ecclesia Beatæ Mariæ de Medio-Villæ), « porte d'entrée » de la ville épiscopale de Saint-Pol-de-Léon, est un édifice majeur de l’architecture religieuse bretonne.

« Morceau d’architecture le plus hardi qu'il eût jamais vu » selon Vauban en route pour Roscoff, son clocher de granit haut de soixante-dix-huit mètres, un des plus hauts monuments gothiques et le plus haut de Bretagne, est le prototype de nombreux clochers-à-jour bretons. Collégiale dédiée au culte marial, le Kreisker accueillait les pèlerins du Tro Breiz. Orgueil des corporations marchandes qui l'ont financé et décoré, il a servi d'hôtel de ville aux trois ordres et de salle capitulaire aux confréries bourgeoises des XIVe, XVe et XVIe siècles puis, abritant à l'occasion une psallette, de chapelle dévolue à partir de 1680 à un séminaire, renommé en 1784 Collège de Léon, avant d'achever d'être ruiné par la Révolution.

Au centre de la rosace se trouve le monogramme de Marie. Tout autour, des symboles prises dans la litanie de la Sainte Vierge, thème que l'on retrouve souvent dans d'autres oeuvres de Labouret. Dans un premier cercle : Miroir de justice, Arche d'Alliance, Tour d'Ivoire, Reine des Saints et des Anges, Maison d'Or. Dans un second cercle : Trône de la Sagesse, Vase spirituel, Etoile du matin, Porte du Ciel, ... Le nom des quatre évangélistes entourent cette rosace : Marc, Jean, Luc, Mathieu. Certains détails évoquent des Apôtres ou des Martyrs : clés, livre, coquilles, croix, roue, fouet, arc et flèches, tête de mort, ... Les vitraux de Labouret demandent une attention particulières : les grandes vertus y sont symbolisées par des objets de la vie de tous les jours ..... Les six personnages symbolisent les foules venues prier Notre-Dame du Kreisker en sa chapelle : un pape, un évêque, un prêtre, un moine, un laboureur, un artisan. The Notre-Dame du Kreisker chapel (in Breton leonard Chapel Introun Varia ar C'hreizkear, in Latin ecclesia Beatæ Mariæ de Medio-Villæ), 'gateway' to the episcopal city of Saint-Pol-de-Léon, is a major building of Breton religious architecture.

'The boldest piece of architecture he had ever seen' according to Vauban on his way to Roscoff, its granite bell tower seventy-eight meters high, one of the tallest Gothic monuments and the tallest in Brittany, is the prototype of many Breton bell towers. Collegiate church dedicated to Marian worship, the Kreisker welcomed pilgrims from Tro Breiz.
