In this place was the old bastion known as the Old Fortress, protected with a thick wall and a very solid work in which the gunpowder necessary for the defense of the city was kept. Under the shade of ancient elm trees is the grave of a romantic hero, General John Moore, who died in 1809 defending the city against the French.
In the year 1834, the then Governor of the square, Don Francisco de Mazarredo transformed it by building the current garden that is preserved as an evocative romantic garden.
In its center, among centuries-old trees, stands out the Funeral Monument of the English General John Moore, killed in 1809 in the Battle of Elviña in front of the French troops of General Soult.
There is a tombstone on the wall of the viewpoint with a poetry by Rosalía de Castro dedicated to John Moore. Another tombstone at the entrance to the garden, on the left wall, recalls the words of the English General Wellington extolling the courage and heroism of the Galician soldier.
From the viewpoint, looking out over the gallery, you can see a magnificent panoramic view of the port and coastal façade of the city"
