[FIN] Halu maailman ensimmäisen suomenkielisen yliopiston perustamiseen oli virinnyt jo Suomen itsenäistymisen kynnyksellä. Tuohon aikaan Suomen ainoana yliopistona toimi Helsingin yliopisto, mutta sen kielenä oli ruotsi. Helsingin yliopiston juuret ulottuvat Turkuun ja kaupungin akateemisiin perinteisiin. Kuningatar Kristiina vuonna 1640 perustama Turun Akatemia oli siirretty Turun palon jälkeen Helsinkiin ja jatkaa nykyisin toimintaansa Helsingin yliopistona.
Suomalaisen yliopiston perustamista varten luotu Turun Suomalainen Yliopistoseura keräsi kolmessa vuodessa 22 040 lahjoittajalta varat Turun Suomalaisen Yliopiston perustamiseksi. Seuran vuosikokous päätti Kalevalan päivänä 1920, että Turkuun perustetaan yliopisto.
Yliopistoseura hankki omistukseensa Kauppatorin laidalle vuonna 1878 valmistuneen komean Phoenix-hotellin. Yliopisto toimi näissä alun perin väliaikaisiksi tiloiksi tarkoitetussa rakennuksessaan peräti 36 vuoden ajan.
Yliopiston muodostivat alkuun humanistinen ja luonnontieteellinen tiedekunta. Lääketieteellinen tiedekunta perustettiin vuonna 1943 sotaa käyvän kansakunnan tarpeisiin. Turun kauppakorkeakoulu perustettiin 1950 vauhdittamaan alueen elinkeinoelämän kehitystä, Turun yliopiston kanssa se yhdistyi 2010. Oikeustieteellinen tiedekunta perustettiin vuonna 1960, yhteiskuntatieteellinen erkani humanistisesta vuonna 1967 ja kasvatustieteiden peruskoulu-uudistuksen innoittamana 1974.
Nykyään Turun yliopistossa on kahdeksan tiedekuntaa ja viisi erillistä laitosta. Opiskelijoita on kolmella kampuksella noin 20 000 ja henkilökuntaa yli 3 400. Monitieteinen ja kansainvälinen yliopisto rakentaa vahvasti yhteiskunnan hyvinvointia ja kestävää tulevaisuutta.

Turkuun perustettiin jo vuonna 1640 yliopisto, Turun Akatemia, joka on nykyisen Helsingin yliopiston edeltäjä. Se oli kolmas Ruotsin valtakuntaan perustettu yliopisto ja Suomen ainoa. Turun palon jälkeen vuonna 1827 Akatemia siirrettiin Helsinkiin. Akatemian siirtämisen jälkeen yliopistollinen opetus Turussa loppui vuoteen 1917 asti.
[FIN] Turku is an old university town. Queen Christina of Sweden established the third university of the Sweden-Finland kingdom, the Royal Academy of Turku, in 1640.
In the 1820s, three major figures of Finnish language, culture and literature, J.V. Snellman, Elias Lönnrot and J.L. Runeberg, studied at the Royal Academy of Turku. The Finnish Cultural Foundation donated a statue commemorating these great men and it was completed in 1968. The Kolme vekkulia statue by sculptor Harry Kivijärvi is located by the University’s current Main Building.
When Finland gained its independence, the only university in the country was the Swedish-language University of Helsinki. Educated Finns thought that it is important that a Finnish-language university is also founded. An extensive fund-raising was organised and altogether 22,040 donations were received from the Finnish people.
The University of Turku was established in 1920. At the time, the University consisted of the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Turku Finnish University Society purchased the Phoenix hotel, built in 1878 right by the Market Square. The University operated from the building for 36 years, even though at first it was meant only as a temporary solution.
The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1943 for the needs of a nation at war.
The Faculty of Law was established in 1960. The Faculty of Social Sciences separated from the Faculty of Humanities in 1967, and the Faculty of Education was founded in 1974.
The private University of Turku was at first a small university. It was nationalised in 1974. The greatest expansion of the University happened in the 60s but the University keeps on growing still today.
The number of basic degrees grow constantly and doctoral training becomes more efficient. In the last few years, the significance of professional further education, open university education and development of business life have become increasingly important.
In 2007, the University of Turku and Turku School of Economics started negotiations of a merger. The university consortium began its operations on 1 August 2008 and, in January 2009, the boards of the consortium decided that the University of Turku and Turku School of Economics will merge into the University of Turku starting from 1 January 2010.
