Over het gebouw "Raadhuis(je) Spanbroek":
Niet alleen achter de stadspoort, maar ook daarbuiten, zijn in West-Friesland nog prachtige voorbeelden te vinden van overheidsgebouwen die getuigen van lokale burgertrots. Zoals in Spanbroek. Aan de Spanbroekerweg 39 bezit deze plaats, die in 1414 stederecht kreeg, een raadhuis, dat als een architectonisch pareltje van de Hollandse Renaissance (1550-1650) kan worden beschouwd.
West-Friesland was in die tijd verdeeld in baljuwschappen waarin namens de graaf van Holland door zijn vertegenwoordigers recht werd gesproken. In eerste instantie was in de dorpen nog geen sprake van een afzonderlijk ‘raethuys’ of ‘rechthuys’ maar werd veelal recht gesproken in het huis van de plaatselijke schout. Gaandeweg groeide echter ook daar de behoefte aan een eigen onderkomen voor bestuur en rechtspraak.
Privilege
In 1462 verleende hertog Philips van Bourgondië, die ook graaf van Holland was, aan de stede Spanbroek het voorrecht tot de bouw van een stedehuis. Als reden wordt in dat privilege vermeld dat de schout, die tevens herbergier was, iets te vaak –en in ieder geval teveel – bier schonk. Hij deed dat ter verhoging van zijn omzet, hetgeen de kwaliteit van de rechtspraak niet ten goede kwam.
Het is niet bekend of dit stedehuis ook daadwerkelijk is gebouwd. Zeker is wel, dat in 1598 het nog steeds bestaande raadhuis aan de Spanbroekerweg werd neergezet. Het is een klein rechthoekig gebouw van rode baksteen met trapgevels voor en achter. Aan de voorzijde staat bovenop een stoere leeuw, die een speer en een wapenschild met het jaartal 1598 vasthoudt.
In het souterrain bevindt zich een cachot met een dubbele deur. De ene deur draait naar binnen, de andere naar buiten. In beide deuren zit een doorgeefluik. Een eenvoudige bordestrap leidt naar de bel-etage waar zich de voormalige raadzaal bevindt. De toegangsdeur op het bordes is omstreeks 1790 voorzien van een fraaie omlijsting in Lodewijk XVI-stijl. Boven die deur was enkele decennia eerder nog een wapen van Spanbroek aangebracht.
Tot 1884 is het gebouw als raadhuis gebruikt. Omstreeks 1920 heeft het nog dienst gedaan als hulpmagazijn van het Witte Kruis. Tegenwoordig is het monument vooral een gemeentelijke trouwlocatie.

Regarding the building "Raadhuis (je) Spanbroek":
Not only behind the city gate, but also outside it, there are still beautiful examples of government buildings in West Friesland that testify to local civilian pride. Like in Spanbroek. At the Spanbroekerweg 39, this place, which was given a city right in 1414, has a town hall, which can be regarded as an architectural gem of the Dutch Renaissance (1550-1650).
At that time, West Friesland was divided into bailiwicks, where justice was administered by his representatives on behalf of the Count of Holland. Initially, there was no separate "raethuys" or "law house" in the villages, but justice was often conducted in the house of the local bailiff. Gradually, however, there too grew the need for its own accommodation for administration and justice.
Privilege
In 1462, Duke Philip of Burgundy, who was also count of Holland, granted the town of Spanbroek the privilege of building a town house. The reason stated in this privilege is that the bailiff, who was also an innkeeper, served a little too often - and in any case too much - beer. He did this to increase his turnover, which did not benefit the quality of the judicial system.
It is not known whether this town house was actually built. What is certain is that in 1598 the still existing town hall was built on the Spanbroekerweg. It is a small rectangular red brick building with stepped gables at the front and rear. On the front is a sturdy lion on top, holding a spear and a coat of arms with the year 1598.
In the basement there is a cell with a double door. One door opens inwards, the other outwards. There is a serving hatch in both doors. A simple landing staircase leads to the first floor where the former council chamber is located. The entrance door on the landing was provided with a beautiful frame in Louis XVI style around 1790. A few decades earlier, a Spanbroek coat of arms had been affixed above that door.
The building was used as a town hall until 1884. Around 1920 it served as an auxiliary warehouse for the White Cross. Today the monument is mainly a municipal wedding location.
