"The M4 Sherman is the largest American tank produced during the Second World War, and nearly fifty thousand copies (all versions) were produced.
Standard tank of the Allied landing forces in June 1944. This tank equipped among other things the 2nd division DB and remained for a long time in service in the French army. Some SHERMAN models were equipped with a star-shaped aircraft engine.
His nickname "Sherman" was given to him by the British, when they received their first copies under the Lend-Lease Act, continuing their tradition of giving US-born tanks the name of a War General. Secession. The US Army subsequently adopts this nickname, and the Medium Tank M4 is called "M4 Sherman".
An iconic Western Front tank, the M4 Sherman is the second largest tank produced in the Second World War at 50,000 units, behind its Eastern Front counterpart: the Soviet T-34 produces 60,000 units the war.
The M4 Sherman will still be used in many Cold War conflicts. Notably the Korean War, the Arab-Israeli conflicts, and the Second Indo-Pakistan War of 1967 during which he will be employed by both sides.

"Le M4 Sherman est le char américain produit en plus grande quantité pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Près de cinquante mille exemplaires (toutes versions confondues) furent produits.
Char standard des forces alliées de débarquement en Juin 1944. Ce char équipait entre autre la 2e division DB et resta très longtemps en service dans l'armée française. Certains modèles de SHERMAN étaient équipés d'un moteur d'avion en étoile.
Son surnom de « Sherman » lui est attribué par les Britanniques, quand ils reçoivent leurs premiers exemplaires dans le cadre de la loi de prêt-bail, continuant leur tradition de donner aux chars d'origine américaine le nom d'un général de la Guerre de Sécession. L'US Army adopte par la suite ce surnom, et le Medium Tank M4 est dès lors appelé « M4 Sherman ».

Le M4 Sherman servira encore lors de nombreux conflits de la guerre froide. Notamment la guerre de Corée, les conflits israélo-arabes, et la deuxième guerre indo-pakistanaise de 1967 au cours de laquelle il sera employé par les deux camps.
