When Postmaster General Benjamin Franklin passed through Sutton to lay out the Post Road, he set a road marker several rods below the present marker site. Bartholomeau Woodbury kept a tavern nearby on Boston Road and promised that if the marker were placed in front of his tavern, he would carve a fine granite marker superior to the type ordinarily used for such purposes. His offer was accepted and at the bottom of the marker, he chiseled his initials B.W.
