from duic.nl:

This polar bear is located in the Hogelandse Park in Utrecht. On May 7, 1945, Canadian and British troops entered Utrecht from De Bilt. These soldiers, handing out chocolate and cigarettes, traveled over the road through Fort De Bilt via the Berekuil into the Biltstraat. The jeeps and infantry vehicles were climbed by enthusiastic Utrechters.

In memory of May 7, 1945, there is a Polar Bear Monument in the Hogelandse Park on the Museumlaan. The maker of the sculpture is Marie José Wessels. The bear looks in the direction of De Bilt, from where the English 49th Regiment of Reconnaissance Polar Bears came.

This division was stationed in Iceland for D-day and was therefore named "Polar Bear". After the landing on June 6, 1944, the route of the liberators ran via France and Belgium to Ede. The liberation of Europe cost this division 1,642 dead and 7,751 wounded, but a meeting is still held every seventh of May at the Polar Bear Monument at the polar bear next to the bear pit.
