The Sardinero
SANTANDER Historical sets
INITIATION BIC:
1986
Access
It is located next to the beaches, between the La Magdalena Peninsula and the Cabo Mayor lighthouse.
Epoch
Late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Description
Its origin is to be found at the end of the 19th century, with the eminently bourgeois fashion of wave baths. The area began to be urbanized in 1849, preserving a set of buildings from the end of the last century and the beginning of the present, of a certain elegance, almost always of eclectic style. The most unique building is the Gran Hotel (currently Hotel Sardinero) and the Gran Casino, by the architect Eloy Martínez del Valle, which imitates that of Montecarlo, the work of Garnier, which was inaugurated in 1916. In addition, the Hotel Real from 1916 stands out. projected by González Riancho; the Casa de Pardo, also by González Riancho, from 1915-1918, etc.
Characteristics
Almost two km. of fine sand on the beaches of La Segunda, La Primera, La Concha and el Camello. This north-facing pass was for a long time a large sardine fishing ground, hence its name.
