A pair of parish boundary markers, set into the kerbstones, marking the boundary between West Ham Parish and Cann Hall Parish.

These are small, shield-shaped boundary markers inscribed ‘W. H. P. 1901’. They are placed on opposite sides of the road from each other and are part of a long series of similar parish boundary markers around West Ham Parish. The markers take various forms and many of them still survive. At this location, the markers are set so that they are readable when you are standing within West Ham Parish. West Ham Parish is urban here, but as soon as you cross into Cann Hall (this area is now once again Wanstead Parish) you enter the public open space of Wanstead Flats. I am guessing that the housing development dates from 1901.

These markers were placed here to mark the boundary between West Ham (to the south) and Cann Hall (to the north and east) parishes. Cann Hall was a relatively short-lived parish, formed from part of Wanstead parish in 1894 but abolished in 1956.
Type of survey mark: Metal plate.

What indicators are near the mark to help people identify where it is located?:
Set into the pavement kerbstones, more-or-less opposite each other. One is outside No. 19 Sidney Road, the other across the road to the east.
