On (or about) May 4, 1889, a group of settlers met at (or near) this location (now the north end of Edwards Park) to establish the provisional government for the new settlement of Norman. The meeting place was the back of a lumber wagon. They elected a mayor, a secretary/recorder, a city marshal, and four councilmen. A double-sided historical marker commemorates this event.
