"Par la violence des combats infligée aux soldats et civils, la 1ère Guerre Mondiale enregistre un bilan général de plus de 9 millions de morts sur 73 millions de combattants, et environ 20 millions de blessés. Durant les quatre années de conflit, cette hécatombe a nécessité un appel important de médecins, d’infirmières, ainsi que l’organisation de l’espace des soins.

A Gozée, on atteint le chiffre de plus de 3000 tués, blessés et disparus. Dans la nuit du 23 au 24 août qui suit la bataille, l’église est vidée de ses chaises. On y entre de la paille, du foin et des matelas. Le dessus des prie-Dieu sert d’attelles pour les membres fracturés. Des officiers allemands seront inhumés dans le petit cimetière près de l’église. Au nord du village, les blessés sont évacués à la lisière du bois et dans les prairies avoisinant le Café de la Belle Vue où des médecins opèrent. L’ordre est donné à ceux qui peuvent marcher de se rendre dans les hôpitaux de Charleroi et de la région. Les autres sont transportés à l’aide de voitures d’ambulance, de trams et d’une vingtaine d’automobiles mis à disposition par les Carolorégiens. A Thuillies, le tram à vapeur emmène huit voitures vers les hôpitaux de Charleroi."

At Thuillies, the steam tram takes eight cars to the hospitals of Charleroi."
