"The building is the work of Ali Tur, architect delegated by the government after the cyclone of 1928. Built in stone in 1931, 23 meters long, it has the shape of a Latin cross.
The facade of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church presents a combination of solid and rounded volumes with two imposing symmetrical towers on either side of the bell tower that oppose the claustrophobic façade and the bell tower with the three bells that bring lightness to the building.
Created at the same time as the church, the high altar is inspired by the Art Deco style, with stained glass effect and elongated lines. Placed under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist, the parish is one of only two Guadeloupe (with The Mold) to light each year the "fire of St. John" in the presence of personalities.
It was first in 1820 that the abbot Simon Leon had planned to extend the presbytery to create a temporary church, but this project was not implemented because the priest Randon decided to rebuild a building outright.
In 1827, the parish priest of the time, Father Limarola, started his wooden construction on the site of the presbytery, with a special levy of 57,770.80 F.
The mango trees and palm kernels of the avenue leading from the church to the market place where a battery of cannons pointed towards the sea were once installed were planted in 1843. "

" Le bâtiment est l’œuvre d’Ali Tur, architecte délégué par le gouvernement après le cyclone de 1928. Construite en pierre en 1931, longue de 23 mètres, elle a la forme d'une croix latine.
La façade de l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste présente une combinaison de volumes pleins et arrondis avec deux imposantes tours symétriques de part et d’autre du clocher qui s'opposent à la façade percée de claustras et au clocher muni des trois cloches qui apportent de la légèreté au bâtiment.
Créé en même temps que l’église, le Maître-autel est inspiré du style Art déco, avec effet vitrail et des lignes allongées. Placée sous le patronage de saint Jean-Baptiste, la paroisse est l'une des deux seules de Guadeloupe (avec Le Moule) à allumer chaque année le “feu de la Saint-Jean“ en présence des personnalités.
Ce fut d'abord en 1820 que l'abbé Simon Léon avait prévu de faire prolonger le presbytère pour créer une église provisoire, mais ce projet ne fut pas concrétisé car le curé Randon décida de rebâtir carrément une édifice.
En 1827, le curé de l'époque, l'abbé Limarola, lança sa construction, en bois, à l'emplacement du presbytère, grâce à un impôt prélevé spécialement d'un montant de 57 770,80 F.
Les manguiers et palmistes de l'avenue qui conduit de l'église à la place du marché où était jadis installée une batterie de canons pointés vers la mer furent plantés en 1843."
