Uit het boek 'Rondom de Binnenmaas':
Op 14 januari 1552 vond de Sint Pontiaan vloed plaats. Hierbij is de dorpsdijk van Hekelingen bezweken en zijn het Grote en het Kleine Wiel gevormd. Late heeft men de dijk weer hersteld met een bocht naar het oosten, om de nieuwe wielen heen. De nieuwe dijk werd Gatdijk genoemd (tegenwoordig Gaddijk).
Zoals de naam al zegt is het Kleine Wiel kleiner dan het Grote Wiel, dat er ten noorden van ligt.

Langs rivier- en zeedijken zijn wielen de overblijfsels van dijkdoorbraken. Door het rondkolkende water zijn diepe gaten ontstaan, tot wel 10 meter diep. Uit het gat werd achter het wiel grond afgezet, vaak zand uit de dieper gelegen lagen. Bij het doorbreken was de kracht van het water vaak zo groot, dat de dijk niet meer te dichten was. Om de kolk werd dan een nieuw stuk dijk gebouwd. Wat nu nog resteert zijn vaak kleine, diepe poelen. Wielen kunnen tot 25 meter diep worden.

The St. Pontian flood took place on January 14, 1552. The village dyke of Hekelingen collapsed and the Grote and the Kleine Wiel were formed. Late the dike was restored with a bend to the east, around the new pools. The new dyke was called Gatdijk (now Gaddijk), which means 'hole dyke'.
As the name implies, the Kleine Wiel is smaller than the Grote Wiel, which is to the north of it.

(Wielen (pools) are the remains of dyke breaches along river and sea dikes. Deep holes have been created by the swirling water, up to 10 meters deep. Soil was deposited from the hole behind the pool, often sand from the deeper layers. When breaking through, the force of the water was often so great that the dike could no longer be closed. A new dike was then built around the pool. What still remains are often small, deep pools. Wheels can get up to 25 meters deep.
