The plaque says, ""Tranquility Base Here - The Eagle Has Landed"
The bicentennial mall sculpture by John Edward Svenson commemorates
The first manned landing on the moon as a tribute to America's astronauts. The 20-foot high fluted concrete shaft symbolizes the vertical thrust away from the earth into the unknown; the sculpture symbolizes the space craft "eagle" landing on the moon; and the eight relief panels commemorate United States achievements in space from the first 15-minute sub-orbital shot To skylab and the shuttle. The bicentennial mall and the sculpture are tributes to the patriotic accomplishments of the city, the bicentennial commission, and the citizens of garden grove. Through their efforts to promote pride in the American heritage and through generous contributions from the community, the mall and the monument stand as testimonials to the indomitable spirit of the people of the united states of America."
