Cloche Old Academy

Il y a une petite tour avec une cloche au milieu du toit. Cette cloche appelait les enfants à l'école. Nous pouvons la voir avec sa roue-pivot où était fixé la corde. Lorsque la maîtresse d'école actionnait cette cloche sortie du toit, la roue-pivot ne faisait que des allers-retours de dmi cercle et les habitants et surtout les enfants l'entendaient avec régularité chaque jour.
Voici le récit de cette école:
À la suite d'un voyage en Angleterre où il fut très impressionné par le système scolaire, Paul Holland Knowlton a fait don d'argent, du terrain et de matériaux afin qu'une première académie puisse être érigée à Knowlton. Un premier édifice d'un niveau en brique est construit en 1854. Le second niveau est ajouté en 1867. Sous la gestion de l'église depuis sa construction, ce n'est que dans les années 1880 que l'école est opéré par la School Commission of the Township of Brome. Elle devient alors la Knowlton Academy. Trop petite pour accueillir le nombre grandissant d'élèves, une nouvelle école est construite sur la rue Victoria en 1896. Vacante de 1897 à 1903, l'ancienne académie est ensuite donnée à la Société historique du comté de Brome. Le nom Paul Holland Knowlton Memorial est adopté lors de leur première rencontre dans ce lieu. Depuis 1903, l'édifice est utilisé comme musée par la société historique.

There is a small tower with a bell in the middle of the roof. This bell was calling children to school. We can see it with its pivot wheel where the rope was attached. When the schoolmistress sounded the bell coming out of the roof, the pivot wheel only made round trips in a half circle and the inhabitants and especially the children heard it regularly every day. Here is the story of this school: Following a trip to England where he was very impressed with the school system, Paul Holland Knowlton donated money, land and materials so that a first academy could be erected in Knowlton. A first one-level brick building was built in 1854. The second level was added in 1867. Under the management of the church since its construction, it was not until the 1880s that the school was operated by the School Commission of the Township of Brome. It then becomes the Knowlton Academy. Too small to accommodate the growing number of students, a new school was built on Victoria Street in 1896. Vacant from 1897 to 1903, the old academy was then donated to the Brome County Historical Society. The name Paul Holland Knowlton Memorial was adopted when they first met there. Since 1903, the building has been used as a museum by the historical society.
