Drinking tea almost seems to be the national sport in Tunisia: people drink it any time of the day and invite you to do the same. A nice place to drink tea in Sidi Bou Said is Kahoua el Alia. This cafe is located in a former mosque. Climb up to the entrance for a great view of the main street of Sidi Bou Said, with Carthage in the background. Take off your shoes and take a seat in the attractively decorated café, where you can enjoy a fresh mint tea. In Tunisia pine nuts are often added to the tea. And sugar. A LOT of sugar. Several well-known (French) philosophers and artists including Jean-Paul Sartre, Gustave Flaubert and Simone de Beauvoir visited this café.
