The Czech Republic (former Czechoslovakia) has been an autonomous state since 1918 when it gained independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In January 1993, Czechoslovakia dissolved into two independent states – the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic.

During WWII Czechoslovakia’s existence was disturbed by being included in the Nazi Germany. However, Czechoslovakia had a government in exile in the United Kingdom throughout the war.

Soon after the end of WWII Czechoslovakia became a part of the communist Eastern Bloc. At the end of 1989 the communist government in Czechoslovakia collapsed and the whole Eastern Bloc, which was governed by the Communist party, dissolved.

In 2018, it was the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia’s establishment. This event was commemorated by many citizens and organizations in all sorts of ways. One of them was planting a protected tree as a part of the Trees of Liberty project.

The Trees of Liberty project looks back at the tradition of planting trees to celebrate state’s establishment anniversary. Trees were planted in 1918 and then also in later years (1928, 1968).

On the 100th anniversary, 2766 new trees were planted on four continents.

Each tree has its own webpage ( Stromy svobody ), where you can find its location and the name of the person who initiated the event. There is a memorial plaque with the Trees of Liberty logo near each tree.

This tree was planted in the fall of 2018 on the centenary of existence the Czech Republic.

Note: In some locations the memorial plaque is still missing (either it has not been made or attached), but you can identify the tree easily according to its webpage here: Stromy svobody .
