Das Kurfürstliche Schloß ist eins der Wahrzeichen der Stadt Bonn und liegt im Osten der Bonner Innenstadt. Es wurde 1697 für den Kurfürsten Joseph Clemens im Barockstil errichtet. Es war damals vierflüglig mit bis heute erhaltenem Hofgarten im Rokoko-Stil und wurde durch den Kurfürsten sowie später dessen Nachfolger Clemens August als Residenz genutzt.

Im Januar 1777 kam es zu einer verheerenden Brandkatastrophe, bei der weite Teile des Schlosses zerstört wurden. Frühmorgens am 15. Januar 1777 brach das Feuer aus unbekannter Ursache im Westflügel aus und breitete sich über den Dachstuhl auf das gesamte Schloss aus. Die Pulverkammer explodierte ebenfalls bei dem Feuer. Tagelang wütete das Feuer und drohte auch, die Stadt Bonn zu zerstören. Zahlreiche Menschen kamen bei dem Brand ums Leben. Später wurden Teile des Schlosses in vereinfachter Form wiederaufgebaut, so wie sie heute zu sehen sind. 1944 wurden im Krieg abermals große Teile zerstört und später wiederaufgebaut.

1818 wurde die Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn als Nachfolger der Kurkölnischen Akademie Bonn gegründet. Zu diesem Anlass schenkte König Friedrich III. von Preussen das gesamte Schloß einschließlich dem Hofgarten der Universität. So wurde das Kurfürstliche Schloss zum Universitätsgebäude und ist bis heute das sogenannte Universitätshauptgebäude der Uni Bonn, auch wenn inzwischen die Räumlichkeiten für die stetig wachsenden Studierendenzahlen bei weitem nicht mehr ausreichen und die meisten Institute inzwischen an anderen Standorten über die Stadt verteilt angesiedelt sind.

The Electoral Palace (in German "Kurfürstliches Schloß") is one of the landmarks of the city of Bonn and is located in the east of Bonn city center. It was built in 1697 for the Elector Joseph Clemens in the baroque style. At that time it had four wings with a garden in the Rococo style that has been preserved to this day and was used as a residence by the elector and later his successor Clemens August.

In January 1777 there was a devastating fire disaster in which large parts of the castle were destroyed. Early in the morning on January 15, 1777, the fire broke out in the west wing for unknown reasons and spread over the roof structure to the entire castle. The powder chamber also exploded in the fire. The fire raged for days and also threatened to destroy the city of Bonn. Numerous people were killed in the fire. Later, parts of the castle were rebuilt in a simplified form as they can be seen today. In 1944, large parts were again destroyed during the war and later rebuilt.

In 1818 the university of Bonn, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, was founded as the successor to the Kurkölnische Akademie Bonn. On this occasion, King Friedrich III. von Preussen donated the entire castle including the garden to the university. So, the electoral castle became a university building and is still the so-called university main building, even though today the premises are by far not sufficient for the growing number of students and most institutes are now located in other locations across the city.
