Dit prachtige hofje ademt een en al historie. De huisjes en de bijbehorende kapel stammen oorspronkelijk reeds uit de 16e eeuw. De bemoste bestrating en de authentieke waterpomp maken het geheel af.

De pomp heeft nu slechts nog een sierwaarde, maar zou jarenlang dienst hebben gedaan als centrale plek voor de arme bewoners van het hofje. Tegenwoordig is het hofje een zeer populaire plek voor huwelijksreportages, waarbij het bruidspaar vaak plaatsneemt bij de sierlijke pomp. U kunt zich voorstellen dat dit met de ouderwetse huisjes en de gevel van de oude kapel op de achtergrond een prachtig plaatje oplevert.

De geschiedenis van het hofje gaat terug naar het jaar 1496. In dat jaar liet Hendrik IV, Heer van Naaldwijk, in zijn testament opnemen dat een som geld moest worden besteed aan de inrichting van een huis voor vijf arme oude mannen. Dit resulteerde aanvankelijk in een houten huisje, dat later door het kerkelijk armenbestuur werd vervangen door vijf kleine huisjes.
In de 17e eeuw liet Frederik Hendrik, prins van Oranje, vijftien huisjes bouwen in de vorm van een hofje, vijf voor mannen en tien voor vrouwen. Om er te mogen wonen, moest men tot de Hervormde gemeente behoren. Vanaf 1795 werden ook mensen van andere gezindten toegelaten.

In het hofje staat een oude kapel, met een gevel uit de 17e eeuw. Ook de kapel heeft een interessant verleden, waarin het voor meerdere doeleinden werd gebruikt.

This beautiful courtyard oozes history. The houses and the accompanying chapel date back to the 16th century. The mossy pavement and the authentic water pump complete it.

The pump now only has ornamental value, but would have served for years as a central place for the poor residents of the courtyard. Today, the courtyard is a very popular place for wedding photography, with the bridal couple often taking a seat at the ornate pump. You can imagine that with the old-fashioned houses and the facade of the old chapel in the background, this creates a beautiful picture.

The history of the courtyard goes back to the year 1496. In that year Hendrik IV, Lord of Naaldwijk, had it recorded in his will that a sum of money should be spent on furnishing a house for five poor old men. This initially resulted in a wooden house, which was later replaced by five small houses by the church for the poor.
In the 17th century, Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange, had fifteen houses built in the shape of a courtyard, five for men and ten for women. To be allowed to live there, one had to belong to the Reformed congregation. From 1795 people of other denominations were also admitted.

In the courtyard is an old chapel, with a facade from the 17th century. The chapel also has an interesting past, in which it was used for multiple purposes.
