Ima was established by Walter and Laura Moncus, who were traveling through the area in 1902 but were waylaid by a winter storm and sheltered in a nearby canyon - the same canyon often used by notorious local outlaw Black Jack Ketchum. Their daughter Ima was born in 1903, and the Moncuses built a general store to serve others who were settling in the area. When the Post Office was established in 1908, the town was named for Ima. That post office closed in 1955. Descendants of the original settlers still live in the area. This church building is still standing but is not in use; a new metal building nearby serves as both church and community center.
