M3 Light tanks began rolling off the line in 1941 and entered combat that year in the British Army in North Africa. The British Army soldiers said it was a honey of a tank for its speed and reliability. It served throughout WWII in US service as the M3 and the upgraded version the M5. The 37mm main gun was universally derided as being obsolete and underpowered. In the original version it had a petrol powered 9 cylinder aircraft engine.
