"On December 30, 1985, the Friends of the Depot received a Louisville and Nashville caboose from Seaboard Systems Railroad (the L&N ran freight trains through Cookeville from 1968 into the late 1970s). This caboose is relatively small in size since, by this time crews no longer lived aboard during freight runs. The South Louisville Shops built the caboose in 1963. This caboose also displayed a new gray and yellow paint scheme, which replaced the traditional red paint found on many cabooses. The 1066 was retired from rail service in the early 1980s.
In the spring of 2005, the 1066, a Bay Window Type Caboose, was restored back to its original appearance when it was first built. The interior of the caboose, with its kerosene stove, is as it was when it was last used. Today, cabooses have become obsolete due to small crews, electronic monitoring, and computerization."
