Over het gebouw 't Reghthuys:
Het Reghthuys is een rechthoekig gebouw uit 1628 (jaartal in voorgevel) met zadeldak.
Aan de voorzijde een rijk gedetailleerde puntgevel met pilasterstellingen, vensters met houten kruiskozijnen en luiken en een topfronton met een gebeeldhouwde bekronende wapenleeuw. Verder zes sierankers en een justitiabeeld in een nis boven de ingang.
Boven de vensters gevelstenen met het opschrift 'DISCITE IVSTITIAM' ('Leert gerechtigheid betrachten').
Toen Johan de Bruyn van Buytewech in 1617 'Heer en Meester' werd over de Heerlijkheid Nieuwkoop liet hij in 1627 een royaal woonhuis bouwen met een toren die nog steeds het Reghthuysplein siert. Het woonhuis, al gauw het Hooge Huys genoemd, is helaas verdwenen. Wegens gevaar voor instorting is het bouwwerk in de negentiende eeuw op de stevige toren na gesloopt. In de bakstenen huid van de toren zijn nog de doorgangen te zien, die eertijds toegang gaven tot de hoger gelegen verdiepingen van het herenhuis.
Om het contact met ambtenaren gescheiden te kunnen houden van zijn privéleven, liet Johan schuin tegenover zijn woning een tweede gebouw neerzetten ten behoeve van schepenen, ambachtsbewaarders en andere lieden met wie hij als bestuurder te maken had.
De bouw vond plaats in 1628, toen de Hollanders in hun steden de charmantste huizen bouwden, terwijl admiraal Piet Hein de Spaanse Zilvervloot kaapte om diezelfde Hollanders aan goud, zilver en andere kostbaarheden te helpen.
Al gauw werd het mooie, vrijstaande gebouw ' Reghthuys ' genoemd, omdat zich onder de Nieuwkopers geboefte bevond, waarover recht gesproken diende te worden. Bovenin de gevel prijken nog – net als op een kant van de toren – de wapens van Johan en zijn vrouw Cornelia van Duyvelandt van Rhoon, terwijl op de gevel van het Reghthuys naast Vrouwe Justitia de vergulde spreuk is te vinden: 'Discite Ivstitiam', leert gerechtigheid betrachten. Onderin het gebouw was een cachot, waarin het te veroordelen gespuis tijdelijk kon worden opgesloten.
Twee eeuwen later kwam het pand als Raadhuis in gebruik, hetgeen duurde tot 1933. Nadat de Vereniging voor Monumentenzorg Hendrick de Keyser het gebouw in 1949 als beschermd monument had aangekocht, werd het van 1959 tot 1961 met grote zorg gerestaureerd en in de oorspronkelijke staat teruggebracht.

Over de stad Nieuwkoop:
Nieuwkoop is een plaats en gemeente in de Nederlandse provincie Zuid-Holland. De drie gemeenten waaruit de gemeente is gevormd telden op 1 augustus 2020 29.021 inwoners. De gemeente heeft een oppervlakte van 90,19 km² (waarvan 16,05 km² water). De gemeente Nieuwkoop ligt midden in het Groene Hart.
Er is enige onduidelijkheid over het jaar waarin Nieuwkoop is ontstaan. Aanvankelijk ging men er vanuit dat de plaats voor het eerst schriftelijk werd genoemd in 1282, maar later werd een akte ontdekt van familie van graaf Floris V uit 1270.
Het oudste deel van Nieuwkoop bestaat uit lintbebouwing langs de Nieuwkoopse plassen (de Polder Nieuwkoop en Noorden), een gebied waar vroeger de veengronden zijn afgegraven. Veel van de woningen ten zuidoosten van deze weg liggen op een geheel door water omgeven perceel en hebben een eigen brug naar de hoofdweg (Zuideinde-Dorpsstraat-Noordenseweg). De Nieuwkoopse plassen zijn grotendeels een natuurmonument. De nieuwere wijken van Nieuwkoop liggen ten noordwesten van de hoofdweg, in de Polder Nieuwkoop (een droogmakerij). Deze uitbreidingen stammen van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Regarding the Reghthuys building:
The Reghthuys is a rectangular building from 1628 (year in front facade) with a gable roof.
At the front a richly detailed gable with pilaster positions, windows with wooden cross-frames and shutters and a top pediment with a carved crowning coat of arms lion. Furthermore, six decorative anchors and a statue of a justice in a niche above the entrance.

When Johan de Bruyn van Buytewech became 'Lord and Master' of the Heerlijkheid Nieuwkoop in 1617, he had a spacious house built with a tower that still adorns the Reghthuysplein in 1627. The house, soon called the "Hooge Huys"(Tall House), has unfortunately disappeared. Due to the danger of collapse, the structure was demolished in the nineteenth century except for the sturdy tower. In the brick skin of the tower you can still see the passageways that used to give access to the upper floors of the mansion.
In order to keep contact with civil servants separate from his private life, Johan had a second building erected diagonally across from his home for the benefit of aldermen, craft guards and other people he dealt with as administrator.
The construction took place in 1628, when the Dutch built the most charming houses in their cities, while Admiral Piet Hein hijacked the Spanish treasure fleet to help those same Dutchmen with gold, silver and other valuables.
Soon the beautiful, detached building was called 'Reghthuys' ("Courthouse"), because there was a lot of groves among the New buyers, about which justice had to be discussed. At the top of the facade - just like on one side of the tower - the coats of arms of Johan and his wife Cornelia van Duyvelandt van Rhoon can be seen, while on the facade of the Reghthuys next to Lady Justice the gilded motto can be found: 'Discite Ivstitiam'. At the bottom of the building was a prison in which the rabble to be convicted could be temporarily locked up.
Two centuries later the building came into use as a town hall, which lasted until 1933. After the Vereniging voor Monumentenzorg Hendrick de Keyser (Association for Heritage Conservation) bought the building in 1949 as a protected monument, it was carefully restored from 1959 to 1961 and returned to its original state.

Regarding the municipality of Nieuwkoop:
Nieuwkoop is a town and municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. The three municipalities of which the municipality was formed had 29,021 inhabitants on 1 August 2020. The municipality has an area of ??90.19 km² (of which 16.05 km² is water). The municipality of Nieuwkoop is located in the middle of the Green Heart.
There is some uncertainty about the year in which Nieuwkoop was founded. Initially it was believed that the place was first mentioned in writing in 1282, but later a document from the family of Count Floris V from 1270 was discovered.
The oldest part of Nieuwkoop consists of "lintbebouwing" (= a long sprawling village) along the Nieuwkoopse plassen (the Polder Nieuwkoop and Noorden), an area where peat soils used to be excavated. Many of the houses to the southeast of this road are located on a plot completely surrounded by water and have their own bridge to the main road (Zuideinde-Dorpsstraat-Noordenseweg). The Nieuwkoopse plassen is largely a natural monument. The newer neighborhoods of Nieuwkoop are located northwest of the main road, in the Polder Nieuwkoop (a reclaimed land). These extensions date from after the Second World War.
