"The why is the engine of my story"
Three tipis, then, one bordering on the grotesque with its projections of "trendy" logos and its music box melody so talkative about our childhood; the second, panicked by beams, sort of intriguing torches that would rob our nights; the third, animated by the fire of a twirling hearth.
Then, we enter head-on into the concrete of the small room at the back. The light of a fourth tipi ripples with the slow movement of the water and, at the far end, props support a tapestry returned from the confines of time. At their foot, heaps of coals, a residue of mining prosperity. We return to the sources of the work of Martine Hoyas born in Maubeuge (North), to the original coincidence of this fate which led her to find these tapestries in a house abandoned in the wave of mining pangs. From his studies at the Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes to his arrival in Niort in 1991, these pieces of human history would weave his work.
Finally, with the very delicate finesse of his Rhapsody triptych embroidered with gold thread, six pieces in all are presented in this setting where there is an artificial prosperity. That's all the Coincidence. "It’s like these saving and offensive props: they fight to save these tapestries and, fallen from a collapsing roof, look like rams of destruction. It is a short circuit between the history of the last coal bowls from the mines and our itinerant society of today, which tries not to forget its roots ", explains Martine Hoyas.
"The why is the engine of my whole story," she agrees when we talk about this short-circuit, this Coincidence, seeing in it the incessant back and forth of an artist between action and reflection. Convening the meeting of the two is his art. This alternating current contrasts with the direct current of the Sèvre which borders his workshop in La Roussille.
This meeting of two worlds, she carries it within her, releasing strength and wisdom, like a bulwark in her perpetual quest for meaning, with all the challenges that impose their fragile parts. To accept the Coincidence is to offer this poor art, made of modest materials to which it gives their second life, all the ingredients of sublimated human wealth. And that is absolutely beautiful.

La première exposition annuelle 2020 de la Ville de Niort s’est ouverte ce mercredi à l’espace d’arts visuels du Pilori. Un viatique pour un voyage en profondeur chez l’artiste niortaise Martine Hoyas.

D’entrée, les trois tipis qui accueillent le public depuis hier et jusqu’au 7 mars, dans la grande pièce du Pilori, portent en eux une signature. Ceux qui connaissent l’artiste niortaise Martine Hoyas reconnaîtront sans mal ces tapisseries élimées par le temps, récupérées dans des maisons abandonnées, devenues des peaux viscéralement organiques, tendues là comme autant de réflexions sur la mémoire, sur la précarité de nos habitats dans ce monde de mobilités et de migrations. Avec, en filigrane, la main de l’homme omniprésente, humble, pétrie d’humanisme.

« Le pourquoi est le moteur de mon histoire »
Trois tipis, donc, l’un confinant au grotesque avec ses projections de logos « branchés » et sa mélodie de boîte à musique si bavarde sur notre enfance ; le second, affolé par des faisceaux, sortes de lampes torches intrigantes qui cambrioleraient nos nuits ; le troisième, animé par le feu d’un âtre virevoltant.
Puis, on entre de plein fouet dans le concret de la petite pièce du fond. La lumière d’un quatrième tipi ondule au gré du lent mouvement de l’eau et, tout au fond, des étais soutiennent une tapisserie revenue des confins du temps. À leur pied, des tas de charbons, reliquat de la prospérité minière. On revient aux sources de l’œuvre de Martine Hoyas née à Maubeuge (Nord), à la coïncidence originelle de ce destin qui l’a amenée à trouver ces tapisseries dans une maison délaissée dans la vague des affres minières. De ses études aux Beaux-arts de Valenciennes à son arrivée à Niort en 1991, ces morceaux d’histoires d’humanités allaient tresser son œuvre.
Avec, pour finir, la finesse toute délicate de son triptyque Rhapsodie brodé de fils d’or, six pièces en tout sont présentées dans ce décor où il règne une prospérité factice. Voilà toute la Coïncidence. « C’est comme ces étais à la fois salvateurs et offensifs : ils luttent pour sauver ces tapisseries et, tombés d’un toit qui s’effondre, font figure de béliers destructeurs. C’est un court-circuit entre l’histoire des dernières gamelles de charbon sorties des mines et notre société itinérante d’aujourd’hui, qui tente de ne pas oublier ses racines », explique Martine Hoyas.
« Le pourquoi est le moteur de toute mon histoire », acquiesce-t-elle quand on évoque ce court-circuit, cette Coïncidence, en y voyant l’incessant va-et-vient d’une artiste entre action et réflexion. Convoquer la rencontre des deux, c’est tout son art. Ce courant alternatif contraste avec le fil continu du courant de la Sèvre qui borde son atelier de La Roussille.
Cette rencontre de deux mondes, elle la porte en elle, dégageant force et sagesse, comme un rempart à sa quête perpétuelle de sens, avec toutes les remises en question qui imposent leurs parts fragiles. Accepter la Coïncidence, c’est offrir à cet art pauvre, fait de matériaux modestes auxquels elle accorde leur seconde vie, tous les ingrédients d’une richesse humaine sublimée. Et ça, c’est d’une beauté absolue.
« Coïncidences », jusqu’au 7 mars, au Pilori de Niort (1, place du Pilori), du mercredi au vendredi, de 10 h à 12 h et de 14 h à 19 h, et le samedi, de 14 h à 19 h, sauf jours fériés. Vernissage vendredi 24 janvier, à 19 h. Gratuit.
