Carl Lotave, originally from Sweden, was an artist who was so moved by the beauty of Pikes Peak that he moved to Colorado Springs in 1901. Lotave proposed that a cemetery be established at the summit of Pikes Peak, reserved for artists and other creative individuals. He died in 1924, before approval for the cemetery was obtained. It was decided to deny the cemetery, but Lotave's ashes are interred here under a metal plaque in a boulder field - the only "official" grave at the summit of Pikes Peak.
