Fonte do Paseo Central da Alameda

[GA]

"In front of many other sources of the city, destined to the water supply of the citizens, this one responds more to a decorative function of the public space. The origin of the sources of ornamental use comes from the Middle Ages, when Islamic culture introduced them into private buildings and public areas, combining both the usefulness and beauty of moving water. These fountains located in palaces, courtyards, gardens, squares or mosques served as a water supply, to cool the environment, to acclimatize the spaces and for sensory enjoyment.

In 1873 the Municipal Works Commission agreed to link the gap between the Paseo Central and the Horseshoe by means of stairs, demolished years later by the poor condition in which they were, leaving in their place some ramps until the current staircase was built.

In 1955 the budget was approved to repair and replace materials from the sources of the Alameda and the Praterías, which was 5,000 pesetas. Special emphasis was placed on the need to repair special engines and lamps.

From these works until 1932, in this place of the park was located the Fonte dos Condes de Altamira which, coming from the Plaza de Abastos, was finally installed in the winter gardens of the Paseo da Ferradura. That was when the current fountain was placed in this position."
