As soon as you arrive on the outskirts of the valley, you realize that Jugon-les-Lacs is aptly named: tucked into the hollow of the relief, the village is surrounded by water! Originally, a Roman road crossed the territory. Overhung by a fortress (which has now disappeared) which will remain almost impregnable, the village and the priory came into being in the 12th century. One of the Dukes of Brittany, then owner of the fortress, decided to strengthen its defenses: the lakes and ponds were thus created, using dikes built on the two surrounding rivers that are the Jugon and the Arguenon. .

The predominance of water is found even in the alleys of the village, where canals meander silently. You will enjoy strolling between alleys and alleys and will appreciate the historic houses of the village: half-timbered house, ancient inn and other rich residence of notables. Past and present are thus closely linked in this Petite Cité de Caractère.

Dès votre arrivée aux abords de la vallée, vous vous rendez compte que Jugon-les-Lacs porte bien son nom : encaissé au creux du relief, le bourg est cerné par l’eau ! A l'origine, une voie romaine traversait le territoire. Surplombés d'une forteresse (aujourd'hui disparue) qui restera quasi imprenable, le bourg et le prieuré virent le jour au XIIè siècle. L'un des ducs de Bretagne, alors propriétaire de la forteresse, décida d'en renforcer les défenses : les lacs et étangs furent ainsi créés, à l'aide de digues bâties sur les deux rivières environnantes que sont la Jugon et l'Arguenon.

La prédominance de l'eau se retrouve jusque dans les ruelles du bourg, où des canaux serpentent silencieusement. Vous aurez plaisir à déambuler entre ruelles et venelles et apprécierez les maisons historiques du bourg: maison à pans de bois, antique auberge et autre riche demeure de notables. Passé et présent sont ainsi étroitement liés en cette Petite Cité de Caractère.
