"Clara Eitmann Messmer, 96, of Hermann, Missouri, passed away on Monday, May 16th, 2011 at her home

"Mrs. Messmer was born in Brumley, Missouri on July 26, 1914, the daughter of the late Henry K. and Maggie May (Martin) Eitmann.

"She was the widow of George Messmer, Jr. They were married on July 29, 1961 at Hope United Methodist Church in Arnold, Missouri. The Messmers moved to Hermann in 1971. George preceded her in death on January 26, 1984.

"Clara graduated from Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, Missouri in 1936. After graduation she taught home economics, art and science in Fairfax, Buffalo, Stoutland and Arnold, Missouri schools.

"Clara was a member of Congregational Church Springfield, Missouri. She was a member of the Eagles and Eastern Star in Arnold, Missouri. She was also secretary for many years with OATS in Gasconade County.

"Mrs. Messmer was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister Anna Heinsmann." ~ Legacy

"The Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheater hosts a wide range of open-air performances. The area includes lawn chair or picnic blanket seating, a concession stand, and a fenced-in park. The Amphitheater is available to individuals, organizations, and businesses (including to those from outside Hermann) to rent for concerts, movies, corporate and organization events, picnics, etc. Contact the city office at 573-486-5400 to reserve." ~ Visit Hermann


"The Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheatre was dedicated Monday, May 31, 2006, in Hermann Missouri located on Gutenberg Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets. The amphitheatre exists because of a generous donation from Clara Messmer. It was out of the desire and generosity of Mrs. Messmer, who wanted to return something to Hermann, that this facility has become a reality. Hermann Missouri - Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheater StageThe retired school teacher once said she was never a musician, but like going to band concerts like the ones put on by the local band. The theatre will feature lawn seating only. Attendees will be encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Persons are also invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy before the performances. The 2006 concert program will be under the auspices of the Hermann Arts Council." ~ Experience Hermann
