The cotton gin was erected in 1899 by Martin L. and Irene Kelly near this location. The gin machinery consisted of a Lowry round-bale press used for compressing a bale of cotton to half its normal size for ease of transport. Ownership of the cotton gin changed several times before the business closed in the 1930s.
