Long Description:
IN 1883 ALFRED E HOUCHEN, BEGAN EXPERIMENTING WITH FISH CULTURE ON HIS BEAR RIVER FARM. THERE FOR THE FIST TIME SALMON WERE HATCHED IN A PRIVATE HATCHERY.
IN 1885 HE MOVED HIS HATCHERY TO CHINOOK, WHERE IT OPERATED AS A PRIVATE HATCHERY SUPPORTED BY PROSPEROUS SALMON FISH TRAP OPERATORS.
IN 1890 THE STATE OF WASHINGTON TOOK OVER THE HATCHERY, AND ALFRED HOUCHEN BECAME THE FIRST ASS'T DIRECTOR OF FISHERS.
IN 1900 THE STATE OF WASHINGTON HAD 25 HATCHERIES IN OPERATION.
IN 1935 A LAW WAS PASSED OUTLAWING FISH TRAPS AND THE CHINOOK HATCHERY DEPENDENT ON THESE TRAPS WAS CLOSED BY THE STATE.
IN 1967 A GROUP OF PENINSULA CITIZENS ORGANIZED "SEA RESOURCES, INC.." A NON PROFIT CORP. TO EDUCATE STUDENTS IN THE ART OF FISHING AND PROPAGATION.
THRU COMMUNITY DONATIONS AND THE SUPPORT OF SOME CORPORATIONS, SEA RESOURCES HAD BEEN ABLE TO CONTINUE.
