It was according to his wish that after his death, on July 4, 1848 in Paris, Chateaubriand was buried on the islet of Grand Bé, near the edge of the cliff and eternally turned towards the sea and the storm of which, he said. , "The noise rocked my first sleep".
Chateaubriand has in fact been looking for a small island to be buried since 1823, as he wrote at that time to one of his friends. On the eve of his 60th birthday, in 1828, he submitted a request to the mayor of Saint-Malo to grant him "the western tip of the Grand Bey". The municipal council will however answer him by a refusal, pretexting some reasons relating to "the public and private life of the writer". Subsequently, however, a poet from Saint-Malo who admired the writer, Hippolyte de La Morvonnais, intervened with the new mayor Louis Hovius in 1831. This time, the municipal council consented, subject to an agreement with the Minister of War, to erect his tomb on the western tip of Grand Bé. The tomb will finally be ready ten years before the writer's actual death, in 1838.

The work was initially surrounded by neo-Gothic iron railings, but in 1944 a shell broke an angle of the tombstone and the railing, damaged, was replaced by a project closer to the initial project and comprising only three sides in order to that the writer can extend his dialogue with the sea, according to the decision of the chief architect of historical monuments Raymond Cornon, who also respected one of the writer's wishes: that his tomb contains no inscription.

If his tomb does not indeed contain any inscription, a non-nominative plaque was however placed on the wall behind the tomb, with the inscription:

C'est selon son vœu qu'après sa mort, le 4 juillet 1848 à Paris, Chateaubriand est enterré sur l'îlot du Grand Bé, près du bord de la falaise et éternellement tourné vers la mer et la tempête dont, dit-il, « le bruit berça mon premier sommeil ».
Chateaubriand recherche en fait une petite île afin de se faire enterrer depuis 1823, comme il a pu l'écrire à cette époque à l'un de ses amis. À la veille de ses 60 ans, en 1828, il fait passer une demande au maire de Saint-Malo afin que lui soit concédée « la pointe occidentale du Grand Bey ». Le conseil municipal lui répondra cependant par un refus, prétextant quelques raisons relatives à « la vie publique et privée de l'écrivain ». Par la suite cependant, un poète malouin admirateur de l'écrivain, Hippolyte de La Morvonnais, intervient auprès du nouveau maire Louis Hovius en 1831. Cette fois, le conseil municipal consent, sous réserve d'un accord avec le ministre de la guerre, à ériger son tombeau sur la pointe ouest du Grand Bé. Le tombeau sera finalement fin prêt dix ans avant la mort effective de l'écrivain, soit en 1838.

L'ouvrage était au départ entouré de rambardes en fer de style néogothique, mais en 1944 un obus brisa un angle de la pierre tombale et la rambarde, endommagée, fut remplacée par un projet plus proche du projet initial et ne comportant que trois côtés afin que l'écrivain puisse prolonger son dialogue avec la mer, selon la décision de l'architecte en chef des Monuments historiques Raymond Cornon qui respecta aussi un des vœux de l'écrivain : que sa tombe ne comporte aucune inscription.

Si sa tombe ne comporte effectivement aucune inscription, une plaque non nominative fut cependant posée sur le mur en arrière du tombeau, avec pour inscription :

"Un grand écrivain français a voulu reposer ici pour n'y entendre que le vent et la mer. Passant respecte sa dernière volonté." Plaque non nominative
