An influential family in the area in the middle ages, William Bateman (c. 1298 – 6 January 1355) was a medieval Bishop of Norwich [Appointed on 23 or 24 January 1344 and consecrated on 23 May 1344. Died in office on 6 January 1355]. (

South Elmham Hall, was formerly the country residence of the Bishop of Norwich. The hall is currently known as Bateman's Barn and offers guided historic tours of the house and its grounds during the summer months.
