The Old Chester Jail was built in 1840 at a time when the Town of Chester was experiencing growth from the building of the The Western Railroad, now the Boston & Albany Railroad, which opened in Chester on May 24, 1841. The small brick jail is three bays wide with a central entrance with an overhanging pediment and flanked by windows on each side. The building has a slate hipped roof.
The building is built into the side of a hill and actually has two floors. The upper floor contains a open meeting space and the lower floor contains the jail cell. After the jail was retired the building was uses as a meeting place for various organizations. It is now part of the Chester Historical Museum.
