"As early as the second century, Hackenberg was a place of pagan worship. Its summit is now occupied by a chapel, an ancient cemetery and artillery turrets from the Maginot Line.
The earliest definite references to the "parish of Hackenberg" date from the 12th century: a charter from the Archbishop of Trier enjoins various parishes, including this one, to make an annual pilgrimage to Mettlach, the attached abbey.
The strong demographic expansion of the 18th century, a relatively prosperous period that did not know the epidemics of the previous century, brought about notable changes, with its share of tensions. The too modest church had to be enlarged: this was the subject of a recommendation by the Bishop of Trier in 1765.
To know what the summit of Hackenberg looked like in the mid-nineteenth century, it is advisable to refer to the description given to us by Count Théodore de Puymaigre in an article published in the review Austrasie in 1853. He started out in the skin of a traveler who arrives from the valley of Budling "wild, green by the hedge, by the gardens" and embraces the site at a glance: the presbytery, the school house and the cemetery "surrounded by a wall and closed by a skeleton door ”and of course the church, with the sacristy and the seigneurial chapel, dedicated to Saint Hubert and built by the Faust family of Strombourg, lords of Bousbach in the 17th century.
The end of the 19th century witnessed the collapse of the parish of Hackenberg and its slow decline. From 1871, the Prussian administration separated the villages of Budling and Veckring and in 1883, the parish priest was to reside in Budling: the 2 villages were each entitled to a new church and a cemetery; in 1900, the domain was attached to the municipality of Veckring. As for the buildings, it was only a series of misfortunes:
- in 1859, a fire caused by bonfires to celebrate Solferino's victory devastated the site
- in 1889, the church - except the choir - the other buildings were demolished to build the Veckring church
- in 1944, what remains is destroyed by the fighting for liberation.
The chapel of modern construction occupies the site of the old mother church common to 4 villages, the current chapel was rebuilt in 1961.
The tombstone of the Loewenstein family inside the Hackenberg chapel and the tombstone carved on both sides with figures, dating from 1535 and 1550 and embedded in the wall of the porch of this chapel are classified as historical monuments by decree of May 29, 1922."

" Dès le II ème siècle, le Hackenberg était un lieu de culte païen. Son sommet est occupé aujourd’hui par une chapelle, un ancien cimetière et des tourelles d’artillerie de la ligne Maginot.
Les premières mentions certaines de la « paroisse du Hackenberg » datent du XIIème siècle : une charte de l’archevêque de Trèves enjoint à différentes paroisses, dont celle-ci, d’accomplir un pèlerinage annuel à Mettlach, l’abbaye de rattachement.
La forte expansion démographique du XVIIIème siècle, époque relativement prospère et ne connaissant pas les épidémies du siècle précédent, amène des changements notables, avec ses lots de tensions. L’église, trop modeste, doit être agrandie : c’est l’objet d’une recommandation de l’évêque de Trèves en 1765.
Pour savoir à quoi ressemblait le sommet du Hackenberg au milieu du XIXème siècle, il convient de se reporter à la description que nous en donne le comte Théodore de Puymaigre dans un article publié dans la revue l’Austrasie en 1853. Il se met dans la peau d’un voyageur qui arrive du vallon de Budling « sauvage, verdi par la haie, par les jardins » et embrasse le site d’un coup d’oeil : le presbytère, la maison école et le cimetière « ceint d’un mur et fermé par une porte à claire-voie » et bien sûr l’église, avec la sacristie et la chapelle seigneuriale, dédiée à Saint Hubert et édifiée par la famille Faust de Strombourg, seigneurs de Bousbach au XVIIème.
La fin du XIXème siècle fut le témoin de l’éclatement de la paroisse du Hackenberg et de son lent déclin. A partir de 1871, l’administration prussienne sépare les villages de Budling et Veckring et en 1883, le curé doit résider à Budling : les 2 villages eurent droit chacun à une nouvelle église et un cimetière ; en 1900, le domaine est rattaché à la commune de Veckring. Pour ce qui est des bâtiments, ce ne fut qu’une suite de malheurs :
- en 1859, un incendie dû aux feux de joie pour fêter la victoire de Solférino ravage le site
- en 1889, l’église – sauf le chœur – les autres bâtiments sont démolis pour construire l’église de Veckring
- en 1944, ce qui reste est détruit par les combats de la libération.
La chapelle de construction moderne occupe l’emplacement de l’ancienne église-mère commune à 4 villages, la chapelle actuelle a été reconstruite en 1961.
La pierre tombale de la famille de Loewenstein à l'intérieur de la chapelle de Hackenberg et la pierre tombale sculptée aux deux faces avec personnages, datant de 1535 et 1550 et encastrée dans le mur du porche de cette chapelle sont classées au titre des monuments historiques par arrêté du 29 mai 1922. "
